Can anyone point me in the right direction to finding a M&W turbo kit (or equivalent) for a 3020 diesel tractor. I realize the turbos are readily available from any supplier, but the rest of the parts that made up the original kit seem to be hard to locate. Any advice wouldbe much appreciated. Joe

You can purchase a running 4320,4620 or 5020 for the price of a complete turbo 3020 kit and installation. These tractors, particularly the 4620/5020 sell cheap. Less $$$ for the whole tractor than a 3020 engine rebuild after a failure.

I don't think that the 3020 engine was a lightweight engine, as I've seen several with many thousands of hours of trouble-free operation. But, like brokenwrench mentioned, they simply weren't up to the additional load that a turbocharger imposes, particularly on the cooling and lubrication systems. Treat them right and they'll run just as long as any other JD engine. The M&W kits aren't worth a whole lot in my opinion.

You might be better off moving up to a 4020 if you need extra horsepower. The 3020 engine does not respond well to turbocharging, especially under heavy loading conditions. Ive had several through the shop with the bottom end beat out, balancers trashed, and one with the majority of the crankshaft and balancer in the oilpan(trying to pull a 5 bottom plow) The turbo gives the engine the power to lug down, and pull, but it doesnt have enough bottom end strength to take the abuse. Good blocks and cranks for 3020s are almost impossible to find.
