Drove my 730D home today. Everything was fine for the first 10 miles or so. Slowed down to turn off of the highway, and when I gave it some throttle after turning it started to smoke terribly and lost much power. Never touched the throttle for the first 10 miles as I was on a highway shoulder. Limped it this way for a short distance until I couldn't take the smoke and smell anymore. Seems to be getting way to much fuel. Smoke is black and sooty. Checked injector timing and it was OK. Rack was at 16, so I set it back to 13, but it still smokes. What could make this happen so suddenly? By the way it has a new block, pistons, and cam. Anyone have any ideas what is causing this?? Thanks for any help!

Scott:

I'm not sure, but I would check the injectors first.

Does it smoke at fast idle, no load ? If so, I would remove the valve cover and one at a time, crack each injector nut loose and see if either one stops the smoking when it is eliminated (I guess you could also do the same from above by loosening the lines at the pump end of the lines). If they both act the same, then it's probably something else.

It's possible that a piece of grit lodged in an injector and is holding it open, which would let it's portion of fuel come in at the wrong time and with no atomization. That would make for smoke and loss of power.

Try that and post back.

It smokes at all speeds, load or no load. It does get worse at higher RPM.

Then I'd check for a hung injector.

I'd have to agree.. sounds like the needle stuck in the injector.. or spring broke... run the tractor with the valve cover off.. and loosen the injection lines to figure out which injector to look at first... Also lookin the air intake system to make sure something isn't pluggin it.. (we have problems with dirtdopper building nests in the intake tube.. they run fine.. and then break loose and stop up the air passage..) pull the bottom off the airclean and see how it runs... good Luck..
