I need to replace an oil seal by the fan on my B. How do I remove the govener? Are there internal parts to remove or just the 5 bolts that hold it to the block? How should I set the engine before I pull it so as not to mess up the timing?

Hey there MWM, Well yes, you have to remove the obvious top governor bolts BUTTTTT T before you can lift the governor off, you have to remove the top crankcase cover pan next to it so you can get access to remove the steel oil line fitting on the governors bottom. The fittign will remain around the line from down below, just come off the governor.

NEXT, that governor has to be in time with the crank gear, assuming you have a mag or distributor ran off the end of the governor shaft. One way is to have the mag or distributor out and turn the flywheel so you can see where the governor shaft is (like flat horizontal is my advice) and mark it and DO NOT move the flywheel in the meantime and replace the governor gear on the same cam gear tooth to match your mark. That governor shaft turns the same direction and RPM as the crank/flywheel and when the flywheels Left Hand Impulse timing mark is in the 3 o clock position in line with a mark on the tractors side (assuming the flywheel is in time and cam to crank gears are also) the left piston is at TDC and the female slot in the governor shafts end is flat horizontal then. BOTTOM LINE Just be sure you put the governor BACK IN TIME WITH THE CAM GEAR, and that flywheels Left Hand Impulse at 3 o clock and the governors female slot flat and then mark and put back at same place is probably your best bet.

Also, if you remove the fan shaft at the governor case, replace it back with the same shim gaskets as it has now to keep the bevel gears (fan/governor) in proper mesh and backlash.

Good Luck n God Bless
