I have a 1977 John Deere 2640 with a 146 loader. I am having problems with the hydraulics. About 6 months ago the hydrualics got real sluggish and I started having the hydraulic fluid under pressure start leaking out the fill cap behind the seat. I contacted my John Deere dealer and he acted like I was crazy. He did suggest that I replace the filter and clean the pump intake screen and replace all the fluid which I did this seemed to stop the problem until now. Again the problem has occurred and my service rep does not seem to have any ideas without just taking it apart and experimenting which means alot of cost. Can anyone make a suggestion what might be wrong. The tractor is an excellent tractor excepr for this one problem. Thanks Greg

it seems like an internal pressure leak is spraying oil to the inside of the filler cap area.
a way of checking it can be by removing the rockshaft, plugging the pressure port in the transmission housing a(a plug should be fabricated, there is 2300 psi pressure over there)
and carefully starting the engine. if you see a jet or spray of oil twards the cap position you should follow it up. if there is no oil coming from this direction, the rockshaft cylinder assembly should be checked.

My internal pressure leak was caused by the rockshaft piston. The O-ring that goes on the piston was about half gone allowing oil to by-pass the piston and spray out the back fill hole. Once fixed hydraulics improved alot and brakes worked. It was an easy fix. You just pull off the rock shft housing remove the piston assembly and put in new improved o-rings
