Years ago, mid 60's I had a 420 with a 5 speed and double clutch for continuois pto. I looked at a 420 ,but could not tell if it had dbl clutch. I could not feel the two stages by working the clutch pedal but it was so froze up from rust and setting it could hardly be pushed in. It seemed to have a 5 speed but the shift lever came thru a pressed steel dome shift gate which I don't remember mine having. It is a a 1957 by the numbers. Model was 420U. Is there any numbers or way I can tell if it has the clutch?

David

Wayne set you straight on the live pto bit. Since I bought into a bag of worms of a 420 let me look into the crystal ball and philosophy. It sounds like that tractor has been setting outside for a while. If you look down into the dome where the shift gates are and check on the rubber boot that goes over the shifter, it may be rotted and has been letting water in for a while. Anyway, If the dome has three slots to the front and three slots to the rear, you should have the makings of a 5 speed. Also to my knowledge the only way the live pto came was with the 5 speed. Have Fun

My Dad has a 420T 5-speed with that shift gate that you are referring to. FYI.

David, the way to tell is the lever that engages the pto. On the dual clutch it is backward from one without the dual clutch. On the dual, you move it to the right (sitting on the tractor) to engage the pto. On the non-dual, you move it to the right to dis-engage pto. You can determine this by grasping the pto shaft by hand (engine not running) and see which way is in or out of gear.
