Went to a John Deere dealer today and was told that John Deere no longer made or sold power steering fluid. The guy asked the chief mechanic in the back, and he said to go to auto motive supply store and buy good grade power steering fluid. Is this right? I need some brand names and numbers so that I can change my whole system and put in some brand new fluid. Thanks for any help.-Mike

Mike, that Deere power steering system is just a basic hydraulic system so power steering fluid, as well as trans fluid, motor oil, or hydraulic fluid will make it function.. The question is "for how long & how good?"

~A while ago I did a home brewed hot & cold oil viscosity tests of motor oils, hydraulic fluids & other hydraulic fluids & what I found was the closest for cold weather that stayed fairly close at high temps was good old standard Deere Hy-Guard.. Power steering fluid was ok at below 32°F but was way too thin at 80° up [that P/S fluid runs pretty hot when in operation]...

~At higher temps regular 10W40 motor oil was actually pretty close to the original Deere spec fluid.. In fact is was a real close match at 60°F & up.. Problem was it got way too thick at below 32°F..

~Based on my O° to 140° unofficial viscosity flow tests I would say about the closest you will find to original Deere P/S fluid is Deere Hy-Guard..

~If I get some extra time I plan on re-running my tests using some 10W40 & different synthetic motor oils as those might have better low temp flow characteristics & work out real good... I would really like to use a standard 10W40 motor oil as it has good anti foam, anti rust, & good high temp ability but it's thick viscosity at low temps could cause pump or pump drive shaft problems..

~Based on my viscosity flow tests I believe the original Deere P/S fluid must be a mulit viscosity type engine oil with something added for better cold flowability..

Clooney, is Hy-guard the same as John Deere 303 oil? The reason I ask is the person I bought the tractor from told me to use 303 oil and the dealer told me that he thought Hy-guard and 303 oil are the same.
Thanks for the reply, that is very informative for us.

Mike, I'm not sure on the Hy-Gard being a Deere 303 trans fluid.. It would be close & probably meet the 303 spec.. I haven't bought Hy-Gard in a while [I buy 55 gals at a time] so maybe Deere is calling it's Hy-Gard a 303 trans fluid.. I guess you will have to call Deere & find out.. OR, maybe someone that has bought Deere Hy-Gard lately can look to see if,, then it post here..

~As far as know a 303 trans fluid would work as I think it is a 10W20 hydraulic fluid [I would have to look to be sure though].. The Deere Hy-Gard has a viscosity improver added in it & I think that is what gives it that closer to Deere P/S fluid quality.....

In our '64 4020 book, it called out JD 303 for the hydraulic and transmission fluid. I think it was a few years later that Deere introduced their "-Gard" line of oils, Torq-Gard, Hy-Gard, etc. Our 4400 Combine called out "Hy-Gard".

I'm pretty sure JD 303 was the predecessor of Hy-Gard
