Looked at some old plows today and saw a John Deere plow that interested me. The axle for the land wheel came out from plow frame clear over the top of the wheel and then down to the center of the wheel. Loooked like the wheel was on backwards but that was the way it was made. The plow beams had #457 on first, #458 on second and #483 on thurd beam. Any idea how old this plow is? Must hace been before the 55 and 66 models.
Thanks , David B

David, It sounds like you were looking at one of the #5 plows, it could be either a 5A, or 5C or 5H, they are pretty similar and it really gets down to nitty gritty to tell them apart. Only thing that bothers me is the third beam number, I think you may have made a typo, because it should be 484. The 483 beam was used on the #45 and is not of the rounded I beam forged material, rather it is just flat stock. Anyway, the #5 plows were made in 1920 up to 1939. Seems like that land axle that caught your eye was a weak spot, I've seen a number of them broken and welded there.
