How do you know what decals are correct for an H, I got a set from a reputable source who advised that the H never came with the "H" in a black circle on the front of the hood & that all of the letters on all models after 1941 ie; "JOHN DEERE" were the same size, but the very first picture on the source's website shows an H with the "H" in a black circle toward the front of the tractor & the "JOHN DEERE" is smaller than what was sent to me. I have already put the decals on & they look nice, I just don't know if they are correct? I have seen a couple of different "sets" available but someone needs to make it clear which set is correct!

You see a LOT of tractors, decorated with that black ball. People sort of expected to have that black ball, and didn't know that it only appeared in 1947, so in spite of the fact that no H tractor ever left Waterloo with such a decal, the suppliers of "aftermarket" decals obliged, and provided one.

You also see model identification decals, even the black ball variety decorating the hoods of UNSTYLED tractors like the A, B, G and D!

That's why people who know about it, tend to go to one of the two REPUTABLE decal vendors.

The incorrectly decaled tractors which you so often see on display are the reason why the infamous "correct police" were invented, although to be quite honest, when someone puts grossly incorrect decals on thier tractor, it is best to keep the gufffaws and giggles private. It's best, I think, to let the uninitiated discover thier "errors" all by themselves!

Mike is right. All the model's had the model letter on the seat channel, read from the pulley side. After the late styled models were introduced in 47, the black circled letter you discribe was used on the hood.

I didn't know that eather, but TWO CYLINDER several years ago said no "H" was on the hood. The lettering was silkscreened without the black outline on the JOHN DEERE through the 1940 model year. Then decals were used. Can't find it now but I think they also said the the lettering "MODEL H was on the seat support.
