I'm having difficulty getting my late B fanshaft out. I have the fan/clutch off, but can't seem to get the shaft to come out. Does it only come out through the rear end after the bevel gear is pressed off? Looks like a permanent retainer on the front end. I'll bet this is a booger to get back together with the spring tension and all. By the way, it is off of the tractor and I want to clean it all up, check the bearings and repaint it. Thanks!

Hi ED,
I had my B fan shaft off and apart last year but only after I did an archive search here. I can't remember exactly right now but it was not very hard at all. You depress the fan and remove the 2 beveled fan retaining locks. It sorta falls apart from there. One thing I will say, while you're this far change the big fat O-ring (actualy called a packing)that's in the rear shaft housing that sits on the governer. It's cheap (about $4.00) and your J.D. dealer can get it for you. I can't see not doing it at this point and having to come back this far later. My 2 cents. Good luck.
