Govenor question......can't get enough RPM's

I've been messing with the RPM's to get them higher while I pull a sled. I've got a 1941 A and have shorted the govenor linkage and lengthened the carb linkage, vise-versa and all kinds of adjustments, but can't get the right combination. I haven't put a tach on it see exactly what I'm turning, but several folks in the crowd mentioned that my RPM's are to slow. I had my 11 year old son pull it one day while we was prepping the sled for an upcoming pull and I walked along side and held the carb wide open and it performed better. The govenor does work and responds well when it acts like it's going to die when at idle or with an open throttle.

Are there things in the govenor that I need to check or replace? Do they get dirty and the weights are slow to respond? Would a sloppy end play be symptoms of my problem, or am I not adjusting the linkage correctly?

Thanks for any help.

BMeyer, it could be as simple as a weak governor spring. Or rod adjustments.
~Start by adjusting the throttle linkage from the governor to carb...With carb & governor held wide open adjust the throttle rod to be 1 hole short of entering the carb lever hole. ~Then try to get your RPM's by adjusting the rod length between the hand lever & governor spring.
~If you can't get enough RPM's that way try a new governor spring or even 2 governor springs [the second one should be cut shorter]....
