How do I know if my 70 is postive or negative ground, I know its supposed to be pos. ground. Bought new harness and want to make sure its right, still has large reg. and gen. but wiring was all messed up, only had pull on ign. switch, just basically two wires. Ammeter was bypassed ,it probably don't work.

Cgrey:

Whichever battery terminal is hooked to the tractor chassis or frame, that is the ground. If the positive nbattery is hooked to the frame, then it's set up as positive ground.

F-I-T, thanks, but the problem is no battery, no battery box, no seat, just cables

CGrey:

Not much way to tell now that the ammeter has been bypassed. If it were there, putting a load like a lamp on the non-battery end would tell you how it was wired.

Now you might as well go to James' site www.deerehunters.com and get the correct wiring diagram, which is for the original positive ground. Not many iwres on a '70' gas. Two to the VR, one by-pass to the coil from the starter to coil (if it was so equipped...can't remember), various lights.

Shouldn't take too long.

Good luck !
