Evening gang, Yep I know this is a JD Tractor site, but if Im gonna take my motorhome to the New York State JD Expo, my generators gotta work right which it aint now, especially when taking my first wife (she dont like me to call her that lol) my mother, and my daughter n her best friend.

Its an Onan Emerald I 4.0 KW with a one barrell carb and coil n points ignition which Ive already been through and its fine. The problem is it wants to lope slightly (governor picks up n down over n over though not real bad or not too much RPM change) and not run a good steady RPM as all my other Onan's did. The carb has a bottom of bowl power adjustment and a needle at top I consider an idle air bleed adjustment. The problem seems that if you open (richen) the power needle to where it runs the best and lopes n hunts the least, although it NEVER black smokes idle or under load, it just smells like shes too rich and never absolutely stops slight loping/hunting completely. Then, if you shut her off and restart her immediately, she black smokes baddddd dd n coughs n spits till she clears out all the raw excess fuel. If she sets a while before re start, shes fine and dont flood out.

It has a vacuum choke pull off and an automatic choke and they BOTH work fine and the choke is total open after she warms up and durign re starts so thats not the cause of excess fuel. Air filter and passages are new n clean.

I had another Onan which I removed the carb and it had some junk in the bowl near the seat n needle valve and I fixed it, but this is a different prob in that she wont hold a good steady RPM and Im confident its a carb and not any ignition problem. The governor spring and linkage appear fine and are clean and free moving.

I guess I will remove n clean the carb n check the float level n needle n seat etc etc (It has an electric fuel pump, no gas EVER out or over the bowl nor any gas leaks) but was wonderign if any you guys had any experience with those Onan carbs or other experience when one acted that way. If after I clean the carb and check the seat n needle and float she still does it, Im gonna be upset n angry lol

John, I enjoyed your last article in GM. Thanks! The 4kw Onan in my RV lopes for a minute or so after startup then runs smooth. These things do more sittin' than runnin', so I would guess that it is gummed up somewhere -- carb or tank. Keep us posted. Bryan in KS

I don't have any manuals here with me but I think there are different holes in the gov. linkage you can put the spring in to get away from this. Look at where the gov. spring is attached and you might be able to move the spring to a different hole farther or closer to the pivot point. I can't remember for sure but I think further away solves this problem. It will be tuesday before I get to my manuals. Good luck.

If everything else is ok the "gain","sensitivity" or "proportional brand" was what I was thinking of too. To limit rpm droop from no load to full load I kept setting more linkage ratio so that there was increased throttle plate rotation per the same govenor arm movement. Until it started to hunt/surge anyways, then backed it off an adjustment hole.
