My brother brought home his 51 G with the frt end wobbling all the way home ;-). Since neither of us know much about JD's, we need some expert advice on taking the wobble out and where do we start. It does have narrow frt, rollamatic if that helps thanks Max

Hey Max, Congrats on the purchase of the G. Theres nuttin that sounds better than a well tuned JD G Tractor. Well, you asked for expert steerign related advice and sorry I am not qualified to provide you with such, but will tell you what I do in similar situations.

1) The first thign to look at is if the wheel bearings and the outer wheel bearign pre load adjuster nuts are both in snug and properly adjusted, cuz if either is out to loose, it contributes some to bad steering etc.

2) The next thign is if the tires are matched and both inflated properly.

Finally, to excess steerign shaft rotational play. Can the steering wheel be moved a lot like 1/4 turn or so before the wheels start to turn???? If so, below are a couple adjustments which can help.

3) If the long steering shaft seems to have any whatsoever or excess horizontal front and back end play movement, that can be improved by removing the steerign shaft end bearing caps 2 bolts and removign some of the shim gaskets which tightens that end bearing, eliminating some of the slack. That is located on top the pedestal under the sheet metals top front end nose crown.

4) Often, theres excess distance (caused by wear or mis adjustment) between the steering shafts horizontal worm gear and the sector gear on top the vertical shaft leadign down to the wheels. They (worm and sector) need to be adjusted closer together. Its also located on top the pedestal (under a 4 bolt/screw metal cover) under the nose cone crown. Once removed, clean all the grease out, and theres a vertical locking set screw in a half round adjuster opening at the base of the eccentric bushing. If its removed, if you rotate the eccentric bushing, it moves the worm and sector closer together, until you reach another half round location to re insert the set screw. CAUTION, most wear is in the center straight ahead position, so if you adjust the sector too close over to the worm there, it may bind and be too tight out near the turn ends. I think you have a half moon sector gear and not a full round gear????? ??? (told u I was no expert lol) in which case you cant move the gear on a different spline to a new less worn location.

Sooooo ooo look at the tires and wheel bearign adjustments and then adjust any excess horizontal steerign shaft end play at the end bearing cap (remove shims)and any excess worm to sector distance by rotatign the eccentric bushing and re locatign the set screw.

Good Luck, post back any questions.

Thanks John, printed off your info, we'll give it a try when we get some time. Don't know how well tuned it is, but at idle the frt tires bounce at each stroke ;-)

Sounds like it's tuned just right.
