Just put a Pertronix Kit on our 4020 LP. I've done this before on several 2-cylinders and on a 2520 gas. The other tractors turned out fine after the installation but this one is giving me trouble. The tractor acts like it is out of time when we go to start it. It acts like the starter comes up against compression and it starts harder than it did with points. We timed it to 25 degrees BTDC with a timing light. Once it is started it seems to run alright but it is a bear to start. Do any of you guys (and gals) have any ideas or experience with this? I'm probably on my own as far as manufacturers help is concerned so any help you can give me is appreciated.
Thanks
Bob F.

haven't timed any LP's but have timed many more with electronic ignition....does sound like your too much advanced...the my tractors always times at 20 advance at full throttle and 0 on the start.

Make certain the advance mechanism is working and not hung up/sticking. Or the springs knocked off and the advance coming in way early.

I think we timed it at about 2/3 full throttle (I'll have to look at the tach in the morning to see what that is for rpm). We don't have a timing light ourselves so dad called in a friend of his that has worked on Deeres before. He suggested that we time it somewhere in the vicinity of 20 to 25 degrees thinking that was where he used to time gas 4010's and 4020's. I'll see if I can beg, borrow or steal a timing lite and try it at 16 degrees and 2000 rpm. Thanks a bunch for the help.
