I was just on the photo ads section and came across a farmall M that was advertised with a hand clutch. What's that all about? I've seen them from time to time on that section, just got so curious this time to ask it here. Thanks for any help with this one.

We had a Super WD 9 afew years ago with a hand clutch that was factory original. Not that common but it was a factory option.

We have an H with a handclutch that attaches ahead of the foot clutch, it just operates the foot clutch by hand, no live power. Lary

I can't comment on the M's or the 650's, but I have seen W-4 and maybe W-6 standard tractors with hand clutches.

Tye,

G-Man is right about the M&W. The hand clutch on a letter series gives you live PTO...maybe live hydraulics as well, I forget. Not a bad trick for a tractor first made in '38, '39...

I have a friend who has an IH 650 std. It apparently came from the factory with a hand clutch. I don't know if it was available with a foot clutch or not.

I believe M&W made a kit to convert them to hand-clutch operation. Apparently M&W made enough aftermarket parts for Farmalls that if you installed all the various kits, you'd have a tractor that was half M&W. What's also interesting is how some of the anti-Deeres like to bash two-cylinders for having hand clutches, when there were many other makes and models that also had them.

The M&W hand clutch conversion disconnected one side of the differential through the left brake pinion to keep the transmission turning to run pto and be able to stop. The w-series tractors used a rockford over center clutch as an option-no live pto with these.

Re: M+W hand clutch, after mkt for Farmall H, M, etc., was inserted late in the drive train, and may have been mounted in the left brake housing, was used only to stop forward motion when using PTO implement, could not shift gears because Transmission was still turning, interuption was at point of pinion gear. Also, original equipt true hand clutches were found on O-4 and O-6 orchard tractors. Those were over center, normal type full function clutches.
