Thad, as built it should have had 2 marks like this ><. Over the years the end of the crank gets hit with a hammer or bumped & the marks get destroyed, so more than likely the crank was re-marked with a punch mark. Pull the L/H spark plug & roll the engine around until the L/H piston is at [or close to] TDC. Then stick a pencil or wire in the L/H plug hole & feel the piston top as you move the flywheel back & forth to find actual TDC. At that time the L/H impulse mark on the flywheel should be at 3 o'clock & the flywheel slot should be parallel with the ground, if it is, verify that mark is correct [or remark the flywheel to crankshaft]..... .

Thad, usually those dots and v marks line up if your flywheel is on the right spline, and as Pappy there told ya, you can be sure if when the left (flywheel side) piston is at TDC, the Left Hand Impulse flywheel mark should be at 3 o clock in line with the mark on side of tractor. The lil tip on the inner side of flywheel needs to fit in the open notch in the oil slinger also and the flywheel needs to be installed in to within 0.005 to 0.010 of the D shaped bearign and seal housing. The clutch disk has to also be in time to avoid vibration.

Rotate the crankshaft until the left piston is at exactly top dead center. Place the flywheel on the crankshaft with the LHImpulse mark at the 3:00 position, aligned with the timing mark on the gear cover. That's all there is to it.
