Ok, I just got a 420U at a auction After I switched the two spark plug wires around, it started. As you open up the gas, the linkage opens up and does not go back to idle. The lever has to be moved almost all the way over, and then the linkage pulls the carb wide open. The engine was rebuilt, the carb..etc.You have to full choke the carb every time to start.I have a manual on the way.... thanks Bob

Bob, actually the govenor rarely gives trouble on those tractors. The big spring may be missing on the linkage, up near the top of the radiator. Also could be other problems with the linkage (worn rods, holes worn too big, ect. As to having to choke it every time, remove the gas line at the sediment bowl and make sure a good stream of gas runs for 30 seconds, could be trash in the tank or the carb. inlet filter.

Wayne; Thanks for the ideas. Today I hooked a drag on the tractor, and worked it for a while. When you are wide open it runs great, and the gov. kicks in when needed. Then, you go to idle, it keeps on running wide open. As I bring the throddle down, it takes forever for the rpm's to go to idle, and then wants to quit. You can move the gas lever at least half way open, before the linkage moves off the carb. All the holes in the linkage have been redone,(as far as I can see) And a new bowl and fuel line, and I still ck'd the flow of gas, and there is plenty. I want to thank you for taking the time to help! I know everyone is busy in the spring! Bob in northern Mn.
