Years ago (in the 70's) my dad had a 70 diesel that i have pictures of with the air intake beside the muffler and the 70 I just got has the same. It is serial number 7026193 and it is a 70. I have seen 2 other 70's with this on it. Anybody who wants to jump in this can of worms get jumpin. :-)

I've said this before right across also it is the bigger stack than the one that are in the nose cone . I'm going to ask My uncle he worked at the deere place where we got the 70 He might remeber if it came with it or was put on later

TB....it's very easy to put a 720D air canister head, hood and pre-cleaner assembly on a 70D if you have the parts. As Frank has indicated, the original 70 pre-cleaner design pushes the assembly forward of the hood sheet metal and into the nose cone sheet metal. Does it look like the hole in your hood around the up right pre-cleaner tube is a "factory punched" hole or does it look like it was cut manually (sharp edges, irregular lines)? This conversion may have been done by a dealer or a local mechanic.

Looks like an easy converstion to me.. just the upper air cleaner housing.... the 720 hood is the same except the air cleaner hole.. could have had the 720 hood installed some where along the line... Now that I think about it.. a friends 70Gas is this way...

My two 70's and my 70D standard all have the mounts for the air stack.. but would come out in the nose cone not in the hood (not beside the exhaust stack... Not sure about the radiator out of a 720.. but the sheet metal is the same on the 720's as the 70's... (the stacks look much better side by side...)

TB:

I'm going to try and put some sketches together and try to post them later, but the best thing would be for you to post a digi-photo of what you have if you can. That helps answer a lot of questions.

I'm just the opposite. I've never seen a '70' with the precleaner stack even with the muffler....it was always a bit in front of the muffler. When I say across from the nuffler, I mean directly across from.

I'll try to scrounge up a picture.

Here's a bit of sketching that show the differences. Unless the aircleaner mounting from a 720 is installed on a 70, or a fair amount of work is done to the 70 style mount, the air stack on a '70' can't help but be located in front of a line that passes through the muffler laterally, while being perpendicular to the hood line.
