I have a JD 70 gas (that hasnt run in a years)and it has a 3" diameter hole in the front side of the radiator bottom, side opposite the water pump. Is there supposed to be a plate there or what? On my friends radiator it is solid, there is no hole there....is this rusted out or some sort of cleanout access? it is very rusty and I can only see a few rusty bolt heads.
Any ideas?

That hole contained (at one time) the thermostat that actuated the radiator shutters. The one on my 50 is still there, but it doesn't work and the arm that connects it to the shutter actuating mechanism is broke off. So now it's just a fancy cover plate. Replacement thermostats are expensive and there's no sense in getting one if you don't have the radiator shutters to go along with it.

If you're planning to get this tractor going again, my advice would be to make a cover for it and seal it up somehow. Your tractor will run cool with no thermostat, but it will work.

Running an engine too cool just wrecks it in short order. Both the early 50,60 for certain and the 70 Id'd have to check the parts CD, can have the thermostat retofited to on top of the cylinder block with factory parts from a salvage yard. 55 model years or so changed again to the bypass cooling and are tougher to change the latest parts over to the earliest tractors.
