Pulling a stuck 4020 home tomorrow. Will we be able to steer it, or does the engine need to be running to move the linkage?

Using the "tow" position on the sycnchro shifter is a must. Some years ago a customer towed a 4020 4.5 miles to my shop (without talking to me first). He didn't know about the "tow" position on the shifter. They seized one of the transmission topshaft gears to the shaft due to lack of lube. The powershift has a disconnect that disconnects the PS transmission from the differential pinion so the clutch packs don't turn without lube.

I agree with the others. If you're going any distance at all, you're better off to haul it. And as was posted, if it's a powershift, use the tow disconnect. There is also a "tow" position on the shift quadrant of the synchrorange.

When they were new, or when they're in very good condition, you can "almost" steer when the engine is not running and perhaps get a few pumps from the brakes. Basically though most used machines, no engine - no steering or brakes - at all (unlike an automotive that retains some semblance of capability). I came close to getting killed on one, coming down a very steep hill. Trans. popped out of gear (Synchro-Range), engine stalled, absolutely no steering or brakes. I jumped off just before it crashed - broke both my legs and shattered my heels.

Adam,you be alot safer $$$$ wise to pay to have it hauled because if engine isn't running trans. pump is not lubing trans. shafts and you could be working on trans.I saw that happen yrs. ago when I worked for Deere dealer.Plus after a few pumps of pedal I think you'll find brakes won't work as well.I wouldn't pull mine further than to get it off a road if thats where it failed.Jim B

You can guide it, do not try to strong arm the wheel, try to turn only when tractor is moving;;Also if shes a power shift,be sure to release your tow lever , dont go to fast ;; good luck;;;;;;
