'45 A Loose Flywheel?

Anyone recognize this picture as some sort of aftermarket kit or is this a homemade rig? Concern is this is covering up a loose flywheel on the A project.

Years ago, I had this problem on a 70. Someone had tried to weld the flywheel to the crank on that one. A machine shop in Tennessee had a slick fix with a machined, tapered hub which worked great.

By the way, the Fairbanks-Morse mag is now putting out spark, just needed the points cleaned up.

To post it here, you would go to that picture in Parts and Pieces, right click on it, and copy the URL under Properties to your message here under the "Optional Image URL".

That's all there is to it !

Sorry I can't help on your problem.

Frank

Thanks for the info and help F-I-T.

This must be some kind of homemade rig on this flywheel. We'll find out when we get into it. I know this is a common problem on these tractors. Reading through the archives confirmed lots of folks have tried to come up with ideas other than replacing the crank and flywheel. Lots of money and work! Really points out the importance of keeping the maintenance up and keeping that flywheel tight. Also looks like the bolts need to be replaced regularly as they stretch. Again, thanks for the help. dwm

It's hard to tell from the picture what you might have, but here's an illustration that might help.

On the earlier flywheels, the bolts used to clamp the flywheel to the crankshaft were behind the flywheel. On the front were two bolt holes that were used to attach the hand crank ratchet. It looks like someone might have removed the ratchet part, and left the bolts.

I can't tell if the bolts are being used to attach the flywheel in some manner or not. Maybe you can post a close up of the end of the crank area.
