I have a 318 garden tractor that keeps surging. It seems to be related to not getting a steady flow of gas, is there a fuel pump that could be bad? I have already cleaned the carburator and I'm pretty sure there is no crap in the gas. What else could it be?

Mine does that all the time. I keep a can of carb cleaner at the shop, just for that. You need to take the air claener of and spray into the carb with the engine running at full throtle once a month, or so. The jets are small and easily stopped up on the 2 cly Onan, it only takes a mim. to do

I had the same problem with mine and I did not get it fixed until I took the fuel tank off and drained it. A smallpiece of foam came out. I think it was getting into the fuel line and blocking it. I had blown air back through the fuel line and it would help for a while. You could have something similar.

A lot of the fuel pumps are mounted us as part of the carb body. It may look rectangular and is basically a sandwich affair that has diaphrams and one way valves inside. Putting the kit in is real basic if yours is configured like I described. It would be worth a try. The last one I did the fuel pump kit came with the carb kit. Guess they can make more money that way. good luck

Dean, I am not familar with the 318 but I have a 214 that does the same thing. It is starving for gas. There is a fuel pump on the front of the engine. I have replaced mine, but still have the problem some. I think it is a bad design with the rear mounted fuel tank and a sorry design for a fuel pump. Try pulling the choke out some while working it hard, I have to run mine with the choke out about 1/4 inch.
