I have my Grandfather's '49 MT which was running well, although not used much. I made the mistake of trying to clean it up and I think I dislodged some important dirt dobber nests. It will not do anything now. I discovered bare wires at the ignition switch and taped them but still no luck. I have juice going to the voltage regulator and to the starter but no cranking. Could I have shorted out the switch or starter?

Mike

After going through the checks that clooney referenced and you still get nothing - I am assumnig that when you pull the starter knob nothing happens. Take a look at the starter switch/button, I am thinking that the M will have the button switch on the starter with the pivot arm pushing the button in when you pull the starter knob. I had one on a 420 that was fried inside and wasnt making a connection. At the time I got a new one from NAPA. good Luck

Mike, if it just isn't cranking over there isn't much to that system. It's all self contained on the starter [the ign switch only controls the lights & coil power].
~First thing to check is that the battery isn't dead. [try a charger or jumping it].
~Then put the tractor in high gear & roll it forward & backwards to see if the engine will turn over a little [the starters are prone to jamming in the flywheel teeth on those M's]. If you have a hand crank try turning the engine with that.
~You might try giving the starter a rap with a hammer & block of wood to see if that will dislodge a stuck brush or other internal problem.
~Check all the battery post connections & make sure the ground wire from the battery to tractor frame is making a good connection.

Mike,

This comes to a simple process of elimination. Without seeing what was [perhaps inadvently] done, it is hard to comment. What I can do is send you an e-mail of a wiring diagram for an MT [on its way]. However, this is with a cut-out-relay instead of a voltage regulator...Clooney, John T or Wayne in TN will know or have that...if this doesn't help, then post back with that request...If all the wiring is good and it's the starter, then you may have to take it out and clean all the contacts...not a hard job...good luck, tom

Mike, I am assuming you washed the tractor, the first thing I would do is remove the battery cable from the switch that is mounted on the starter, clean and wire brush the connection, also remove the switch (2 screws) and sand the contacts inside. I have this happen often, with tractors sitting up, or after a wash job. Keep us posted....Wayne.
