Hi Don, I am e mailing you a standard very generic wirign diagram, but as clooney points out, we cant be sure its exactly right for your tractor, so post back any more info or questions you may have. However, heres some tips to get you going in the meantime.

1) The wire up from the generator to the dash is proably the generators output, which would be wired to the BAT terminal on the VR, regardless if its a 3 or wire VR. Is it wired to your VR's BAT terminal???? If so, regardless if 3 or 4 wire, it should be connected to the ammeters load (not to battery) terminal. If its wired instead to an (L) terminal on a 4 wire VR, it is the hot feed to the loads like lights/ignition switch. BE SURE WHERE ITS CONNECTED TO THE VR (3 or 4 wire VR) AND PROCEED ACCORDINGLY.

2) The wire from the coil to the distributor sounds right.

3) If your VR is a 3 wire, it has BAT ARM (or GEN) and FLD terminals. If a 4 wire, it has BAT FLD and LOAD (L) terminals usually on 1 top side, with the ARM terminal or wire off the other side or bottom all by itself.

4) If its a 3 wire, the BAT is wired to the ammeters load (not to battery) terminal ALONG WITH all the other load wires like to the lights and ignition switch. If its a 4 wire VR, ALL loads, like ignition and lights are wired off the VR's (L) terminal (instead of ammeter) meaning the ONLY wire to the ammeters load side is the wire to the VR's BAT terminal.

If the rotary switch is O I L B D (think thats right lol I dont have it in front of me), its designed for the 2 wire tail light system that has BOTH a white light and a red. Those switches require 2 separate hot wires to the tail light so one can be white and the other red on those 2 terminal tail light assemblys.

If its neg ground and the ammeter hasnt already been changed (was orig pos grnd) you may have to reverse its leads so it reads correctly. You may have to polarize the generator once all is hooked up. I assume you have a 12 volt coil???? NOT a 6 volt and any external ceraminc ballast resistor????

Wirign diagram is on its way and sorry so many questions, but not knowing what you have and the tractor may have been modifdied, these are things we need to know.

God Bless the USA John T Nordhoff

Don, unfortunately there isn't a simple wire diagram for the early 60. The ones posted, or in the manual show more than you need & have many extras & confusion. Most cover multiple years & extra circuits.
~Do you want to keep the factory positive ground? If so, is the coil original Deere or an auto parts store coil? [it makes a difference]. If there is a number on your coil send it to me [most Delco's have a stamped number on the case]. Does your rear light have a tail & flood bulb in it? Does your regulator have 3 or 4 terminals on it? [the wire diagram I drew for you shows a 4 terminal with an [L] circuit].
~I sent you a hand cad drawn wire diagram for your early 60. Look at it then answer the above questions & I will redraw it showing the needed changes & polarities. The drawing I sent to you shows the basics you will need. If it is still too complicated & all you want to do is make it run let me know & I will simplify it even more to reflect just the circuits needed to make it run & charge.
