Started out as a simple deal to replace the gasket on the engine oil pump plate that hold the pump gears in, in my 44 B. Took the 4 bolts out that hold the plate and gears in and sure enough the gasket was torn. While I was trying to carefully reinstall the long drive shaft I heard the square drive coupler go "click" and fall into the crankcase. I took off the 3 nuts that hold the pump assembly up in there and I am trying to get the pump housing down. How much force can I apply to get this out or do I need to go in from the top to do this? Also how do you get the pump gears and square coupler back together? Thanks for your help!

everyone's telling you right I use 2 long bolts to hold the pump up with while I stand up & put the drive coupler on. The long bolts let the shaft be low enough to instal the coupler by your self w/o the shaft falling out. than just get under it & push the pump up in place & change the bolts Larry

You can't get the pump out without going in from the top and unhooking all the lines,But with the top off you can get everything back together without taking the pump out.

you're messing up trying to take the whole pump out. Just push the gear on shaft back up with installing the square coupler then put the bottom plate back on. Simple procedure.....

Get yourself a an extendable magnet and go from the top and fish the coupler out, (Been there done that and already have the T-shirt!!!) I put the coupler on the oil pump shaft then slid the shaft back up, It helps to have an extra set of hands, not required but it makes life easier.
