Does anyone know what the piston pin to rod bushing clearance is supposed to be on a 1928 D? How about piston pin to piston clearance? I am having the machine shop bore the piston and rod bushing out to fit the .005 oversize pin. Thanks

Jace,
According to early JD service information, "The piston pin fit in the piston is a push fit. This should be adhered to when reaming the piston pin hole for an oversize pin." Another reference says piston pins should be fitted to pistons so that they tap in lightly".

The pin fit in rod bushings, for a set screw type, is as follows: "The connecting rod bushing should be reamed so that the pin can be pushed through it with a thumb press fit."

Back in those days it is hard to find any sizes to mike to given by JD. They provided some reamers for oversize bushings, but the sizes are not stated.
Hope this helps-

Jace:

Duane gave you good advice. The only thing I could add that some old timers say to fit the piston pins until they just glide through by gravity when lightly oiled. That's what they say in the 70D book, too. That piston takes quite a bit of stress and heat, and is near the same size as in a "D", so I'd think that might be a decent guideline if you can't find any else.
