730D two problems...

I bought this tractor at auction this spring. I wondered why the previous owner had the low idle set so fast because when you slow it down it surges and dies. I have changed filters and have good flow of fuel. Do the pumps or rack need work? Second problem, pulling a 10000 lb cart of fertilizer it will jump out of fifth gear. The lever will move about halfway over to neutral and the tractor quits pulling and the lever goes back to fifth gear position. If I hold my foot against the lever it doesn't come out. Can I adjust the rails or something or is this chronic? Haven't had any trouble in any other gear.

I have a 720D that would not idle right when I got it. I had other problems with the tractor, but fixing the idle turned out to be nothing more than adjusting the govenor spring. I don't remember the procedure now, but I think the spring was adjusted too tight. Hope this helps.

Scott, on that idle problem, it could be almost anything from a leaking injector, to plugged or worn injector tips, to mis timed pumps, to a leaking injector line, to low compression, to a worn cam shaft, to worn cam drive or idler gears, to worn or mis adjusted governor/throttle linkage.
~You best bet on that idle problem is to get a good service manual & go through all the injector & governor timing & set up procedures one at a time & see if that will make it run correctly. If that doesn't help then do an on tractor injector test. You might have to send those pumps & injectors out for calibration if the basic adjustments don't help. If the basic adjustments don't get it to idle correctly you might also want to give it a compression test [difficult on that diesel]. ~You might just want to put it to work for a while & see if pulls good, doesn't smoke too bad & doesn't slobber, that will pretty well tell you the condition of the engine.
~On that popping out of gear, it sounds like 5th is moving out of gear but if the lever moves back on it's own it could possibly be the overdrive jumping out. You will need to know what trans gear sets it has in it [what slot is 1st in?] & what slot is 5th in? Depending on what is jumping out you could have bad trans bearings, or worn detents, or a twisted sliding gear shaft or ?....

Thanks for the response. You have given me lots of options and I know my explanation is rather vague when you can't look at or hear the tractor run. I believe the motor is in good condition as it starts very good. That's the reason I bought it at auction for I had never seen one start so easy. There is very little blowby, zero white smoke, and uses very little oil. But you have to really kick the throttle up to take off with any kind of load. My other 730, which by the way you helped me with last fall, will take off with a load easily. This problem tractor will pull good when a load comes on it in the field but it's just not responsive at low RPMs. The transmission pattern is 3rd, 5th, and 6th on the right side with 3rd at top to the left, 5th in the middle to the right, and 6th at the bottom to the right. I'm pretty sure 1st is top left on the left side but I very seldom use it and I couldn't remember (at home now). I ran the tractor several hours this afternoon and all I have to do to keep it in gear is put my foot (boot, as we do wear shoes in this part of Arkansas) on the shift quadrant just touching the lever and it never jumped out. I did notice a gear noise 2 or 3 seconds before it jumps out of gear. Seemed to be coming from the right side. If you hold the lever in place there is no abnormal gear noise. Just give me your best shot at this "needle in a haystack" and I will have a place to start next time it rains. Thanks
