P.S. I enjoy the communion of tractor enthusiast.

Thanks as always 70D

When all else fails,,,read the book. From JOHN DEERE DATA BOOK by Lorry Dunning,,, First 70 built was 7000001 built as a gasoline on March 27 1953 and was sold in Memphis Tenn. First 70 Diesel was 7017500 built on Sept 14 1954, used as an experimental, then sold as a used tractor in Hampton Ia, No sale date given.

Understanding what it says is another. That particular "book" is known for it's inaccuracies

70D:

I'm not sure of the actual date of the first date of build, but the diesel version of the '70' came along at serial number 7017500, so I'm guessing....1955 ?

Since all the '70' variants shared serial numbers, it seems about 1955 would be about right. But when you look at the number of diesels sold over the two or so years offered, and compare that to the LP, All-fuel, and Gasloine versions, you can see how the acceptance of diesel-fueled engines began to rapidly increase, starting about the mid-fifties ( at least ofr the row-crop style).

We went from a '48 "A" with aluminum hi-compression pistons pulling 3-14's and 5 gallons an hour at $.349/gal to the '70D', our first diesel, with 4-14's, 2 gallons per hour, and the fuel was $.184/gal.

It was an eye opener for my dad (and my uncles) !

70D----- -

The 70 was first introduced in April of 1953, although the Diesel version did not make it's debut until November, 1954, as a 1955 model. I believe this was the first use of the new V-4 starter engine.
