Finaly got back to the crawler's battery draining proublem. Took the wire off the ALT and wired it direct to the volt meter without being on the ALT and it held a charge over nite and the gage is still reading 12. What ever is wrong with the ALT it has been that way since we had it rebuilt and it came back from the repair shop that way. I did have the wire going to the dash on the wrong terminal at the amp gage.

Mike, it sounds like you either have a mis installed alternator or a leaking internal diode.
~First, are there any wires running from the battery stud on the back of the alternator to the regulator #1 or #2 terminals?..If so you have found your problem & that's that the alternator isn't actually a 1 wire alternator, or it is & isn't wired correctly. [post back if there are wires running to the # 1 or 2 on the regulator].
~If the above is ok, remove the big battery wire from the battery stud on the back of the alternator & place a 12 volt test light between the battery stud & the wire [engine NOT running], if the light lights or even glows you have a shorted diode in the rectifier. I doubt you problem is in the diode trio as those diodes are small & pop easily with reverse current & are for regulator control. Your problem is probably in the rectifier bridge as that has 6 diodes, 3 positive & 3 negative for rectification of the stator output [high current]. Sometimes if those SI-10 alternators are left out in the weather those diodes will grow hair & short between the diodes.

Yes there is a wire off the batter terminal. There are wires coming off the other two terminals and all three wires go under a cover held on with the same size nuts as what is on terminal one and two. Day one when we got the crawler I sent the ATL and starter in and told the repair shop to convert the starter to 12V and check out the ALT that it was OK and that it was set up for single wire.

Sometimes you can't see the woods cause all those trees are in the way!!!! The 430 ALT is like I said above with 3 treminals and 3 wires going into cover. The ALT's on the 630 and the 730D have plain backs and the only thing showing out the back is the battery terminal.

Mike, I guess we better be sure we are talking about a Delco alternator here. Does that 430 alternator look about the same as the others you have, or say Delco on it anywhere?

No it is differant from the others. Can't find any ID or numbers. It's been painted over several times over the years. I am sure now that problem is in the alt. It's the 3days now going on day 4 with the ALT unhooked and it is holding the charge. Next week I'll take it in to the shop that was to fix it, and see if they can get it done rigth this time.

Hi again Mike, The only bad thign with having the volt meter wired in the circuit ALL the time is, it will eventually trickle discharge the battery. If its wired off the Ignition (I) on the switch, it will only read when the ignition is on, but it wont discharge the battery that way. If the alternator is bad causing it to discharge the battery and you dont want to have it repaired, you could always insert a 30 to 50 amp or so (dependign on alternators current rating) rated ON/OFF switch in its circuit, or a similar rated diode to prevent reverse discharge, but that (a high amp diode) costs more than a switch. The alternator already a has a diode trio rectifier circuit and Im not sure why it works but still discharges the battery? If you unhook wires off the switch or battery one at a time with everything off, and one of them causes a spark, thats the circuit or load or alternator wire etc thats draining the battery. (remember, the volt meter if always connected, is a drain)

If you meant you took the wire completely off the alternators output terminal and wired it to the voltmeter, all you essentially did was connect battery power to the gauge (which is why it works) and the alternator and any internal short problem it may have??? is out of the circuit, so it cant discharge the battery that way (sort of like my switch circuit above).

John, I am 99% sure it is in the ATL. It has been two days now holding the charge WITHOUT the ALT wired into the curcit. To test it I took the wire right off the ALT and wired the volt meter on to that wire and have left it that way now for two days. Volt meter still reading 12 and I started and ran the crawler today several times without the ALT hooked up. The ALT will have to wait til next week to go back to the repair shop. Pat says he needs it this weekend. We'll go back to the way we've been running it for the last 3 years. Throwing the knife switch at the battery at nite. Still have to replace the AMP gage as that dosen't work eather way. Next week for sure. I mean it as I now have put it in writing for the whole world to see.
