I have a JD 1020 and would like to purchase a used sickle-bar mower for cutting pastures. Could folks please recommend some models, John Deere or otherwise, that I should consider. I am interested in 3-pt. hitch types such as the JD 350 (as opposed to trailer type models). Thanks

I'm using a New Holland 451. The ability to adjust the cutter-bar angle is a real positive feature. The NH 451 can be a little pricey, but the added dimension of cutting banks and steeper hillsides makes the extra investment a wise one.

Last year I was lucky enough to find a very good used #39 which is a 3 pt. version of the #37. I'm very pleased with it but I'm thinking about putting front end weights on our 1020 because it does tend to make the front end light on a hillside. I gave $250.00 for it. Sickle mowers should be easy to come by because nobody uses them in the hayfields anymore. You just have to check the auction bills and the classifieds.HJ

I mowed for years with a Ford 501. It did a pretty good job but I think a better mower would be a jd 350 or new holland mower.

The 350 is a real nice mower. They must be tough to come by because around here, you'd think they're filled with gold. A decent used one will be at least $1000. IH (if you don't mind) also has a nice 3 point mower, but I don't know the model number.

I once saw a mid mount one on ebay for the 1020, 1520 and 2020. Ended up selling for only $400. Thought that would be pretty slick because you could also run a rotary mower on the 3 point at the same time under the proper conditions. And, you would save on the back and neck aches.

Good luck and get ready to pay.

We have 2 JD 350 mowers and we like them. However we did have a lot of touble with bolts braking and coming loose. We replaced just about every bolt with grade 8's and loc tited them in. I like when you hit something with the 350 and the cutter bars kicks back you can just raise the 3 pt to return the cutterbar back. We turn off the PTO pull out of the swath, make a 360 turn while raising the 3 Pt and put the PTO back in gear (it is a strain to do that with the PTO on as the belt thights right now.) and we are rolling. Hint: make sure the pin coming up from the bottom into the wobble joint is always tight and well greased. $1000 is the going price around here too. We bought the 1st one new in 1977 and paid $1350. The second one we got at a auction 3 maybe 4 years ago and we paid $950.

ADDITIONAL: If you do go with a 350 mower, get the book! There are 2 grease points that you can not see on the drive unless the cutterbar is in a certain posistion. Also it is a 3 PT but there is a 4th hook up point to the drawbar. It is tricky to get it ajusted rigth. Once ajusted and if it keeps going on the same tractor you are OK. Change tractors and you have to reajust the 4 point.

Mike doesn't that 4th point just chain to the drawbar or am I "over simplifiying"? I looked at a couple that were on farm sales and just figured that was what the chain was far.HJ

I own a John Deer 1020. The Tractor Serial Number is 067141 and the Engine Serial Number is T26934D. I am looking for a Sickle Mower for my tractor. What are the best styles and brands for using with my tractor?

Thanks!
Ed
