I want to change the transmission oil on my 1953 JD 60. Got all set to do it, then realized it takes a square-headed wrench of some sort. The drain plug has a 3/4 to 1 inch square hole in it. I was wondering where I can get one of these, or if there is a substitute tool or something I can make that will do the same trick. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You guys got my curiosity up, so I crawled under my 1955 model 60 and looked. Also got out my operator's manual. The manual shows the square hole type plug for the rear axle plug and a male version of this for the transmission plug. Both look like of-the-shelf taper pipe plugs. My 60 has neither of these, but has hex heads on both plugs. I didn't take them out, but they look like straight pipe thread with a gasket under the head, like the oil drain plug in a car oil pan. Deere must have changed this after the '53 model year.

As for removing the plug, there might have been some special tool for this, but more than likely, mechanics just used whatever fit (3/4 drive rachet, extension, square piece of steel, etc).

Went out to check. A standard pipe plug might clear on the A, '50. Its lucky the female square hole plug clears the drawbar on a 50 AR. 49 D looks like a close call, but didn't get a good look with a good shirt on. The D still has a coat of "Rust Preventer" in those parts. I think there was a plug where I was looking.

On the 60, the plug in the drawbar area is the rear axle drain. The transmission drain plug is several inches ahead of the drawbar.

I have a Johndeere 60 , 1955 that has the square and I use my 3/4 drive braker bar with 6 inch extension to get below the drawbar.

JKC:

If you mean that it has a female or sunken in 4 sided drive, I use a breaker bar of the appropriate size. In a pinch you could probably put a square bolt head in there, and pipe wrench the shank. Then if you can, I'd preplace it with a standard pipe plug so you could later use a crescent wrench.

Without going out to the shop and crawling underneath - Will a standard pipe plug clear the swinging drawbar? There has to be a reason they put that uncommon 3/4" female plug in the rear end. They used a pipe plug on the engine.

Ralph:

That could be ! Been a long time since I had crawled under a '60' or a late "A".

All you need is a crescent wrench or a pipe wrench nothing special
