I need a little advice on my 720D pony start tractor. The upper coolant pipe, the one from the block to the radiator, has sprung a leak. It has a rust hole in it. Is this a simple repair or is it more difficult than it looks. Also what parts will I need other than the pipe itself. Does Deere handle the pipe? Thanks in advance. Denny

Denny:

I replaced both the upper and lower pipes on my 70D. Neither are available. I looked around and found some aluminized exhaust pipe in the two sizes I needed, and it worked and looks fine.

The fun begins when you go to install them. Get yourself extra o-rings because you'll probably cut one or two in the process. I finally succeed by cutting thin strips from a lacquer thinner can, filing off the burrs and placing about three of them between around the tube to guide it in and keep the o-ring in position. Use some dish soap for lube.

Steve Crum can make them from stainless, but I had mine finished before he became an option.

Yup those water pipes are a son of a gun. I had to put a head gasket on my 730D. The top pipe was made easy with a set of barbed wire stretchers to pull it together. The bottom was a diferent story. I put it together 5 diferent times, all with leaks. I slicked up the oring with everything from hand cleaner to grease, with no luck. It cut every time. I ended up putting silicone on it to prevent a leak even if it did cut the o-ring. It worked great. I just wiped off the excess siliconand nobody will ever see it. Best of all it doesnt leak.

Denny,.....we were in the very same situation up until a month ago. Our '52 "A" had a thin spot and was leaking. We got a like-new top water pipe from Ron Stephens up in Dunkerton Iowa. Problem solved!
