While disking I noticed that the engine "revved" up for a few seconds and then back down. I stopped to check things over, thinking that it may be low in fuel. The fuel pump is "weeping" a little, but not terribly bad. Everything seemed fine. It still does this occassionally but not as often after I put some more fuel in. Could I have some water in the fuel causing this? I don't know what effect "over-revving" a diesel can have and don't want to cause any damage to the engine. The tractor is a '64 model.

First change the fuel filters and try it out for a while to see what happens. If this does not help the injector pump is a reasonable look. You may also want, or need to have the injectors replaced. last resort if none of thses work might be the fuel transfer pump

Bill, My 4020 did this a few years back. It would rev up at the worst of times. It's the injection pump. For $300 you should be able to have it rebuilt. best of luck

Again, G pop is right. You don't want the governor ring to let loose. Have the pump repaired ASAP.

Now you've got me curious. What would(could) happen if the gov. ring let go? Others have suggested that it may be the fuel filter/delivery, I take it you and G-Pop don't agree.?.

By the way, thanks for all the info so far.

Im not sure about the gov. ring, but you are lucky enough to have symptoms. When it finally breaks the engine will run as fast as it can unitil it blows up, and washes the cylinder walls. The only safe way to shut it down is to cut off the air. Cutting off the switch will do nothing for you and bogging it down is chancey. you always take a risk of tearing something up if it gets running too fast before you catch high gear and the brakes. Better have the pump fixed before you have an oversped engine. Ours has done it twice. once with my dad and once with me. He choked it down by starving it for air. It did it once to me. Luckily I was sitting still at an idle, It just ripped WFO and as soon as i realized what was happening I found high gear and the brakes. I thought this was just a freak thing, because this post the only other tractor I have ever heard of with the problem, and I happened to my tractor twice.
