Hi all! I was looking to buy a plow for my 49 'A'
and I found a 3 point 4 bottom John Deere plow,I couldn't find a number but the plow is in real good shape with the coulters and tail wheel. It's a frame plow and the man said that I could take off one bottom and make it a 3 bottom. This plow is a cat.2 and so is my 3 point hitch,My question is this.. about how much would this plow weigh? and could my 'A' pick it up? How much could my 49'A''s rock shaft pick up?
Thanks-morgan

Morgan: Unless you only work sandy ground, you will be a lot happier with a 2-16's trailer plow, we have 6 A's 44 to 52 and none of them will pull a 3 bottom in our soil . Lary

Morgan,
It sounds like a lot of work with some unknowns right off the bat. You don't know what model plow it is, the hydraulics on the 60's and 70's were stouter and most aftermarket hitches for JD's will work with bushhogs but not plows because of the top link attaching point. I suggest that you look for a model 55 or 555 trailer plow. They are plentiful and a lot of fun. Just my take on it.

If it is a 810 series or a F 35/F45 series it should pick it up. But there is no load and depth control on a "A". The 810 plow had a depth wheel that would mount on the left side of the plow standing behind the plow looking forward just behind the hitch when used with a JD 800 3PT. Help guys, wasn't there something on the 800 hitch to give a float???? Or do you have a after market hitch. I recall like on the 246 3PT planter there was a float on the planter hitch and that op book said that on post 1960 tractors, I think the lower arms had pin you could pull and turn to get float. In our area 38 HP weather an "A", 530 or the TRUE HP of a 2010, could pull 3-14" in corn stalks, but fall plowing old sod in the fall, 2-16" was a load.
