I've recently been out running my tractor and playing around. then all of a sudden the tractor starts to act weird. It reving up then down and so on. It was ok on flat ground but when I was going up a hill of any size it started going up and down or it would back fire. Well doing all of that I keep hering a ping sound. I know that I need a water valve but will that help my tractor and make it back to normal again?

Clooney sounds like you are a smart person when it comes to two-cylinder tractors. I'm just a 15 year old kid who really likes the old tractors but dosen't know alot about the fuel systems & mags. By when you say "if you aren't getting a full flow of fuel for 30 seconds what do you mean by that??

Thanks for all your help Daniel

Daniel, the fuel runs out of the tank & through the fuel strainer & 3 way valve, then fills the carb float bowl. If there is a blockage in the fuel tank fitting or strainer & if the carb drain cock is only opened to see if fuel comes out it could show a false reading. When the carb drain is opened the fuel will flow out of the float bowl & it will look like there is a lot of fuel flowing, if it isn't allowed to run out for 30 seconds it won't show the full flow through the entire fuel system. Kind of like picking up a garden hose & having water come out the end, all that means is there is water in the hose, if you want to see if the water is turned on you have to watch it a while...

Daniel, start with a new set of spark plugs more than likely that will set it straight.
~You should probably open the carb drain cock & see if you are getting a pencil sized stream of fuel for at least 30 seconds. With that pinging sound it sounds like you are going lean. If you aren't getting a full flow of fuel for 30 seconds you have probably found your problem & will have to check the carb inlet filter, tank strainer, tank outlet fitting & MAKE SURE the fuel 3-way valve is open all the way.
~It wouldn't hurt to check for a plugged air cleaner or water in the air cleaner cup [common].
~Make sure the carb throttle rods & linkage aren't hitting or dragging on anything.
~If it's still acting up try new plug wires & let us know what mag you are running.
~You don't need a water valve if you don't work that tractor hard & even then can't use it if you are running antifreeze.....
~If you give us the D year & carb type we can give you a base carb setting but if it was running good that probably isn't the problem....
