Saw a fairly new JD the other day at the dealer, not sure of the model but had cab and front wheel drive. Cab , platform and front of engine were blackened, burned. Talked to the dealer they said was totaled, also said it started from a birds next built on the exhaust manifold. Good to check I guess this time of year.

As Taylor says, always carry fire extingushers!! I had my model A catch fire from a wiring short in the ammeter panel. Started burning up around the fuel tank etc probably due to oil around the pressure gage. Grabbed the extingusher (dry powder) gave the wires a shot to put down the flames, quickly removed battery cable. End of problem. No damage except to wiring and a little paint. Did install a big fuse in the main lead to all the wiring except the battery cable now. If I had not had that $20 extinguisher with me I would probably not have that model A anymore either!

A good reason to carry both a 10lb or larger dry chem BC AND a 2-1/2 gallon pressurized class "A" water extinguisher on all tractors/powered equipment. Cheaper than the deductible on the insurance policy. Maybe able to continue work the same day with minimal repairs too. Dry chem will knock down a oil or fuel fire and water will cool it to prevent re-ignition. Plenty of fires have been extinguished with dry chem but kept relighting. Plenty disappointing when this happens again after the extinguisher goes empty. A class "A" water extinguisher with water wetter ( non sudsing soap) will knock down deep seated grass, straw, wood etc fire. Wetting agent makes the water work 3x to 10x better depending on who you ask.
