I got the 430 I bought running but it gallops at idle. I bought a carb. rebuilt kit and think I have all the passages open, etc. But it still gallops. Under load it's ok. Just the idle is goofed up.

What are the possible causes of this. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Roger

As HJ says, the idle mixture needs adjusting. Richen it SLIGHTLY by turning out slightly the idle mixture screw. Galloping or surging or searching- what ever term is used- is a symptom of lean mixture.

Roger

Did you try adjusting the idle mixture. Also the idle rpm may be a bit slow?

Roger, I have rebuilt several of those carbs. in the past couple of years. First, make sure the throttle shaft and seals are good and not sucking air. Second, those carbs. will not idle correctly if the main nozzle is plugged. This is the small tube that sticks up in the throat of the carb. It has to be removed from the bottom, underneath the power screw. You will need a *GOOD* flat screwdriver to get it out, if it has not been out recently, it can be a bugger to remove. However this is vital, it will have several small holes runnning legnthwise of the tube, these must be clean and open. Sometimes you have to use heat to get this nozzle out. Sometimes you have to destroy it and get it out in pieces, if this happens, new ones are available from Roberts Carbs. for around $25. Also any wear at the linkage rods from the govenor and throttle need to be corrected, by brazing up the rods or the holes that have worn too big. Actually, I have never seen the govenor itself give any trouble on these models, usually the (lopeing) is caused by the carb. or linkages.
