I just bought a JD 70 gas with a 3 point on it i was wondering is this a 800 style hitch or a *regular* 3 point hitch?

I know nothing of these hitches because this is the first tractor i have ever had with one.

What are the differences and do any parts interchange?

Thanks Mike.

Mike:

Without getting into great detail, the main way to tell a 800/801 hitch from a "conventional" 3 point arrangement, is that the 800/801 hitch has two top links that join together to mount via a bar to the top mast of the implement.

Hope the picture is revealing.

Post back if you have any other questions. I have an 800 hitch on my 70D.

The picture that Frank has provided is my model 800 hitch mounted on my 1954 JD 60. There are two other versions of the 800 series hitch - 800a and 801. However, the picture Frank has provided should help you determine if you have an 800 series hitch vs an aftermarket 3 point hitch. Please keep in mind that the 800 series hitches can be used directly with conventional 3 point implements without the evener bar and the masthead on the implement.

Thanks for the picture I now know my is complete because i have all the parts in that picture plus some extras.

Do you know why JD decided to change from the 800/801 to the conventional type 3 Point? And what is the valuse of this set up? I don't have any 3 point implments so i just might sell it.

Mike:

JD used this design for a couple of reasons. Two competing teams, one from the Plow Works and one from the Tractor plant were asked to come up with hitch designs that would be marketable, but not infringe on the then current Ford-Ferguson three point patented hitch. The Tractor plant design, the 800, eventually won out and was offered until the Ford patents had lapsed. At that time (the JD 20 series) a conventional load and draft control three point hitch was offered as a factory installed option .

As far as value, they are usable/collectable. I've seen them run in a wide range depending on condition from $350-$700. They seem to sell on eBay well.
