PTO problems

I am writing for my boyfriend, so if I don't get things exactly right that is why. We just bought a used JD 1010 probably about a 1961 about a month ago. Last night he hooked up the brush hog and took it out for a test run. The pto turned ok for the 1st pass then after running a bit the PTO started turning slower but the tractor was NOT bogging down. He pulled it up to the garage and took the brush off and the shaft from the PTO came off also. Looks like we lost the roll pin out of it. We were wondering about the turning slower of the pto if anyone has had this problem before. Not sure if it was due to losing the roll pin or could something else wrong. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks-Amanda Marysville, Ohio

The roll pin's there so it will break (and probably fall out) before other things do when the system's overloaded or shocked. Replace the pin and try again.
