I checked the 1st reduction gear case, filled with oil and restarted the old girl, That took care of the squealling but not the knock. Took off the covers, Flywheel has no play left (fly side if that is correct)rod bearing has very little play. The right side had alot of play, took off cap and the two halves of the bearing were on one side. Not good! My question is can I repace just the one side? The rod surfaces look good and the crank looks fair.. Just an old cheap dirt poor farmer/carpenter

You didn't mention how long you had or worked the tractor. If you are just getting into a "just restored" ole girl, it may be just someone putting wrong size stuff in there to start with. I just took a 420 apart and found that it had a 10 under crank and standard rod bearings. History in some cases is mystery. Good luck

I have known the owner of the tractor for 18 years and it hasn't been worked on in that time. The owner said it was running good when he parked it unless one of his renters used it without his knowledge. I just can't justify a complete tear down at this time of year even though I only have 15 acres to work. Thanks to everyone for the advise I checked at JD today and they can get me one bearing by Tuesday.

Murf, you can only replace one side but I think you have bigger problems than that rod bearing.
~Usually when a rod bearing goes piggy-back [both end up on one side] that means you probably have crankshaft damage & in a lot of cases it distorts the rod bearing bore in the rod, or overheats the rod.
~Before putting money into rod bearings you really should go in farther & actually check for rust, pitting, & out-of-round on the main & rod bearings, then mike the rod for an oval bearing hole.
~Probably should also check for worn wrist pin bores [common on the 70.
~Rod bearings don't go piggy-back for no reason & my guess you will find many other problems in that engine related to rust & oiling.

Murf, sure, its possible to just put new rod bearings on that one bad crank throw and button her up (I took ur post as only side had bad rod bearings, but other side and mains were ok right????) but if that crank throw is egg shaped or cut into a lot, the new rod bearings on that side may or may not last long. If the crank don't mic out of round (egg shaped) too bad and you can install new rod bearigns with the correct tolerance on that side, I would sure be tempted to give her a try before I had to pull the whole crank to get it turned down. Sorry, I dont have any specs or tolerances on the crank or rod bearing fit.
