I pulled home my 70 today, finally got it started when it warms up it runs fine sitting still. Under a load it knocks and then kills, should I be looking at the valve setting,or the timing, or something else other than the main bearings? The tractor sat for 4 years before I got it. I hope there is something simple I can fix Thanks

I just started it again and the knock is turning into a squeal. Where is the best place to find bearings? If I tear it down tonight and order the parts tomorrow,,,well ,,, maybe.

Murf, if the knocking stops when you disengage the clutch & you are getting a squealing, you might want to look at the oil slinger gear [bottom inside the 1st reduction cover]. If that gear isn't oiled with trans oil it will knock & squeal. ~Try overfilling the 1st reduction cover to see if that helps..

My 60 was knocking under certain loads right after I bought it. It ended up that the ignition timing was advanced to far. I reset the timing to book specs and it has run great ever since.

Murf, it's hard to tell from what you gave us what you should be looking for.
~You said "when it warms up it runs fine sitting still. Under a load it knocks and then kills"...When it kills does the engine lock up & quit turning [can you turn the flywheel after it quits?], or does it just shut off & coast [spin] to a stop?
~If it locks up when it quits you have internal engine problems like bearings, or rusty crankshaft, or oil pressure related.
~If it kind of bucks & quits but doesn't lock up you are probably running out of fuel in the carb...Open the carb float bowl fuel drain cock, then unscrew the knurled nut on top of the fuel strainer, then hold that nut down & see if you get a pencil sized stream of fuel for AT LEAST 30 seconds, if you don't get 30 seconds of fuel flow you have a fuel flow problem due to blockage at the fuel tank fitting, a plugged strainer, a plugged inlet screen at the carb or maybe even water in the gas tank.
~If you have a good fuel flow you could still have a problem with the load circuits in the carb causing a lean condition under load. [possibly rust in the passages or plugged holes in the main nozzles]
~If you are still using the old original gasoline thats been sitting that could be part of your problem. [use fresh gasoline]
~What kind of knock are you getting? Does the clutch engaged or disengaged change the knock? Do you get the knock all the way to stall? Is the knock at crankshaft speed or 1/2 crank speed? Can you change the knock by shorting a spark plug out? What does the knock sound like?

Clooney, first the fuel . I drained the take and ran fresh fuel through and thanks to your many previous posts I made sure it would run free for thirty seconds although it took awhile to figure out the nut on top off the sediment bowl. I neglected to say that it does through oil on the clutch side the seal went oout about 10 years ago but has been used on an auger since. The knock is kind of a scary sound since I need this tractor this spring and you can stop it by disengaging the clutch. I don't have the cover off the fly yet to see if it seizes but I will tonight Thanks
