Growing up with olivers and farmalls i am not up to speed on JDs. My 520 needs a moter job.Having never rebuilt a moter without upping HP I would like to know what is the best overbore for a 520. I heard you can go .125 over and get off the shelf parts. Also what HP could I reasonably expect from this job with the same valves etc. And why would anybody build a tractor eng without sleeves. thanks ED

Ed,

As a boy we used a 1950 model B for all of our farming. Two farms, our and my grandma's. Ours was a black muck loam and grandma's (5 miles from ours) was clay. In both situations we pulled an eight foot 4 way in third gear with no problems. After the first disking we would hook a 9 foot spring tooth drag behind the disk and pull both of them in second gear.

I have fond memories of those days. I presently have a 1950 model B and a 1958 model 620. I love them both.

Good luck on your decision.

Dick

The two clinders were built with small dia, long heated ports relative to thier displacement. This was to build in torque and to assist fuel efficiency above other brands by keeping the air-fuel misture mixed with turbulance. You can't get there from here without deep pockets. Overboreing is only going to gain 1 or 2 HP at most. Best to purchase a bigger tractor unless you are trying to squeeze into a light tractor pulling class. $ignificant power from extra di$placement come$ from $troking and a bored out/$leeved block. LP pistons, pulling cam, all-fuel valves, port blending of the valve bowl, an LP manifold and a dry aircleaner conversion might net 60-65HP at stock rpm and displacement. The 520/530's were built with more HP per cubic inch than any other two cylinder except maybe the 430/430 and certainly the 440 gas industrial.
