I was hoping someone could help me determine what size disc would be appropriate for my 1950 'B'. The soil is generally heavy clay. What are the advantages of diferent disc types? I would prefer to stay in the John Deere family of appropriate age with hydraulic lift cylinder.

Thanks in advance

Mike

This 6' transport would be perfect for a B.

Ed,

As a boy we used a 1950 model B for all of our farming. Two farms, our and my grandma's. Ours was a black muck loam and grandma's (5 miles from ours) was clay. In both situations we pulled an eight foot 4 way in third gear with no problems. After the first disking we would hook a 9 foot spring tooth drag behind the disk and pull both of them in second gear.

I have fond memories of those days. I presently have a 1950 model B and a 1958 model 620. I love them both.

Good luck on your decision.

Dick

Hi Mike, I prefer a pull type hydraulic lift tandem wheel disk (seems like I used a KW or KWH series years ago???), they usually have sufficient weight to actually cut when you raise their wheels. As far as size, its preferred to use one at least wide enough to cover out your wheel tracks and still be able to pull it, and thats probably around a 6 footer, depending upon the condition of your tractor and where you have its wheels set. The weight of the disk and size and condition of its blades (in adition to condition of tractor) is a very determining factor in what size you can pull also. If its light and blades worn down and it doesn't go deep in the ground and soil isn't too bad, you might pull a wider one, but I call that pulling a disk and not actually effectivly disking it.

Good Luck John T in Indiana
