3 pt hydraulics quit altogether today. I had put a bolt in the lugs on the LH rear lift arm so I could mount a Slow moving sign. When I started the tractor I lowered the 3 pt but it stopped when this bolt interfered with the swivel on the 3 pt lift link. From this point on the 3pt will not raise or lower.

The bolt is out and everything is free. Oil is up to but not flowing out the oil checking plug.

Is it possibe something has broke inside the rockshaft assy or maybe the key has sheared on the pump shaft.

Any ideas before I have to tear into any of these components.

Don

I am assuming that you have had this tractor a while and have put some time on it.

Things are never this easy, but you mentioned checking the oil level at the check plug. I always fill mine until it runs out. Sometimes that may take a little more oil. Also, if this is a new tractor to you, make sure you are checking at the right hole. I think the bottom (drain) plug and the top (check plug) are the same size.

Another passing thought, if yours leaks like mine, it will facilitate checking the fluid level by removing the check plug and installing one with a petcock in it after you get her working again. Good Luck.

Donwisc, you didn't say what model 420 & whether or not a single or dual T-O-M [there's a difference between the models & T-O-M types].
~There are a few different possibilities on what happened. If a single T-O-M there is a connecting rod between the T-O-M lift piston & inner crank arm. That connecting rod is supposed to be held in with a pin but if the pin was missing, bent, or worn its possible that the connecting rod fell out of its socket if you lifted the 3-point arms. [the same thing can happen on the dual T-O-M but both links would have to fallout].
~The other thing that could have happened is the control link could have come disconnected from the crank arm.
~There are other possibilities from a pump going out at the same time, to an internal valve sticking, to the linkage disconnecting on the control valve. ~If you have a dual T-O-M make sure you have the selector & crossover valves set correctly & they are not half way moved.
~If all the valves are set correctly for the operation you are using [see your manual] & it still doesnt work, you should start with a pressure test of the system, then pull the rear cover to see if the connecting rod or linkage fell out of place. [be careful as that control link will have to be disconnected as the rear cover is pulled back.
~If you tell us the model & T-O-M type we can be a little more specific..

Clooney , I think you hit the nail on the head. Its the only thing that makes sense given the sequence of events. When the 3 pt lift arm was in a bind and me reversing the controls it would pull the connecting rod apart and if that didnt do it I probably did when I lifted the 3 pt by hand.

I am not looking forward to tearing the rockshaft off but live and learn. This is a 420 Tricycle and appears to be dual TOM. It has the 2 levers and 2 arms on the left side which are currently tied together.

Thanks for the tip Don
