Hello,

I have a 2000 Sabre 18HP Vanguard lawn tractor. I use it to tow my weighted lawn attachments such as aerators and thatchers. Last fall i noticed that I was losing forward speed when I was towing one of these attachments. I changed the drive belt but the problem didnt get better. At one point, the tractor was completely stopped while towing up a slight incline, I was able to look underneath the tractor and see that the drive belt was indeed turning the fan on the top of the hydro transmission. I dont know what to try next. Can anyone off any suggestion as to what I should try next???

Thanks,

Jim Siebert

Pulley may be turning, but is the shaft itself?

Check oil level and change oil and filter. See if oil smells burned. Check linkage for movement.

Gordon/Joe,

I assumed the shaft is moving because the tractor moves forward and uphill w/o load just fine. However, I will check it. Do I need to remove the "backend" to check this out and/or change the oil?

Thanks again,

Jim Siebert

Your model Sabre tractor may have a sealed transaxle on it. Check your owners manual for details, you may not be able to add or change the fluid on your model tractor. Only some of the sabres could you add oil to, usually 30w motor oil. And as was said above make sure your control linkage is functioning properly.

The transmision on that lawn tractor is not a "heavy duty" type and isn't designed to pull that much weight. (I'm not sure how much weight you have there, but pulling up hill will definitely magnify the problem.)

Good Luck...
