Gordon, I'm not very good about leaving stuff alone. It is not my nature. Anyway, I found the mark for both cylinders easy enough. The stationary mark was in hiding due to a little rough treatment at some time in the past. I read the manual and was careful not to touch anything warned against unless special tools were available. Intrestingly enough, my manual warned that pump damage could occur if the timing were set so that the mark on the pump went out of sight when the flywheel was turned 90 degrees from the match marks which is exactly how I found mine before I touched anything. With the new found confidence from the first response, I felt good about moving it. Could have been my lucky day, but afterwards the tractor cranked immediatly and had very little smoke (less than before I think). I did not get to work it hard, but as I moved the injection timing earlier, I am guessing it will pull at least as good as before. If there is something otheres can learn, I would like to pass it along. Don't turn the flywheel backwards even for small adjustments to align timing marks. The apparent backlash gave me a slight but detectable misalignment when I went around 720 deg to verify. After I figured out what may be happening and made sure I only turned the flywheel forward, everything became very stable. Thanks for the help.
