Don,
I think the 310 has enough similarity to a 1020, 2020, or 500 / 3020 that the following will help.

There should be two filters down there under the foot platform on the tractor's right side. The main filter will look like an upside down dome with a ~ 3/4 or 5/8 inch bolt head in the center. Change it just like you would an old style oil filter. There's another filter that's a tubular screen that runs transverse and just behind the main filter. You should see a cap with an indent on the right side, near the bottom. Unscrew this cap and fish around in there with your finger to pull out that long tubular screen. You'll loose a lot of fluid in the filter changing process (and the real problem may be that you're low on fluid anyway). Plan on getting at least 5 gallons of JD hy-gard or a good name brand type of hydraulic fluid. I've been using Pennzoil brand in my 1020. Works well. The cheapy fluid stuff will generally cause you more problems than you'll save on the purchase price. The entire system will take 8 to 10 gallons, (memory fails and my manuals are out in the barn).

Also, you should be able to check the fluid level thru a thing that looks like an old starter button that lives behind your right foot on the platform. Has a dip stick on it when you unscrew it and pull it out. Check the fluid level when warm and running.

Good luck with it,

Steve

Steve, Thanks so much for getting back to me.This is all new to me.It is full of fluid.I just didn`t know if A dirty filter would cause this problem. I will do as you say & hope that takes care of the problem. Thanks again, Don.

Don,
A dirty filter may not, but that sideways screen can collect junk and basically seal off the input to the pump -- that would cause the problem you're having.

Hope the job doesn't get too messy, and good luck with it.

Steve
