I have a nitty little oil leak at the oil filter cover. The cover doesn't look like it's deformed. I replaed the rubber ring that goes in the main case groove and it's not leaking there. It's weeping from around the attaching bolt. I replaced the copper gasket there, and now it seems to leak a bit more. I don't want to over tighten it. Never had one leak around the bolt before.

Also, will the entire crankcase drain if I drop that cover off ? I thought maybe I could attempt to dress that gasket surface and true it up a bit. Guessing that it might not be flat.

Any ideas ?

Frank, I have had a few leak at that copper ring over the years. There are usually 2 different causes...the first is that the cover was over-tightened at one time & the stud is crooked [lets hope it's not that]...The other is the cover is slightly caved in at the copper ring sealing area.
~You can just pull that oil filter cover & you get about 1 qt + of oil out of the filter housing. It probably wouldn't hurt to use a little Teflon pipe sealer on that ring when putting it back together....

Clooney:

I'm pretty sure the can and stud are all right. Looked up in there before and when I had the engine down. I had to replace one in our '48 "A" so I know the drill. Not fun.

I should have let it alone. It really wasn't leaking all that much before.....

I think I have some PST sealant around here that I might try.

Thanks !

Frank
