I purchased a gas 2010 Rollamatic NF at an auction Saturday. Real nice tractor. I thought. 2475 original hours and the clock works. Not a dent on the tractor, original tires in nice shape, runs sweet, everything works except the gas gauge, original seat in great shape, always housed, power steering is really nice. The only thing it seems to need is a new valve cover gasket. It leaks a bit but not too bad. It was mainly used for cultivating and the drawbar hole shows that it didn't pull much. Then last night I got to reading the posts in the archives about 2010s and wonder if I did the right thing or should have let the other bidder have it for $2,650.00, I paid $2,700.00. Normally I research a bit before I buy an old tractor but this one wasn't listed on the sale bill and wasn't there yet when I looked things over on Thursday. I bought it to use as a hay mowing tractor and plan to use it with our New Holland 3pt sickle bar mower. That's about the most use it'll get but after reading about it last night I think I may want to give a fresh paint job, sell it and get my money back plus a bit. They don't sound like they were a great tractor. Is there another way to tell their age besides the serial#? The plate is gone on this one. On the other side of the block the number 310117 is stamped and an S is stamped right below it. Would this number give any indication as to age? Do the casting codes on JDs relate to manufacture dates like they do on Farmalls? Are there any other characteristics that would give an idea of the vintage? I'm hoping it's a 64 or 65 as they sound like the good ones. I guess I'm going to try it out this summer and if it doesn't perform like I want or turns into a headache I'll paint it up next winter and sell it. I'm not sure how it's going to get along with the red tractors anyway. I half expected to open the barn door this morning and see they'd ganged up on it during the night and beat it up. Did all 2010s have dual PTOs? This one has two. The top one appears to be a 540 judging by the splines. The bottom one doesn't have a shaft sticking out but appears to turn quite a bit faster. Is it a 1000? Any words of wisdom on these tractors? I'm hoping I got a good one. If I'd looked into them first I'm sure I never would have bought it. At least not for what I paid for it.

The biggest concern is the tractor is likely "hot" when it's misisng the serial number plate and showed up late at the sale without being posted. Most victoms of theft can find thier missing goods if they watch the for sale ads, area sales and auction ads.

I have a 1963 2010 LP row crop with a single front wheel that I have had for 3 years without any problems. Needed some care when I bought it but has turned out to be a great little tractor.

We had a JD 2010 gas and it sucked. Was broke down all the time. Just a pain. It looked really nice because it liked living in the barn....

From what I have heard I thought the problems were with the JD2010 diesel engines not the gas.

The two powershaft holes are so that you can reverse the shaft into the other hole for 1000rpm. There should be a small dust cover for the empty hole. We had a 2010 utility and it was a great tractor. It did a lot of loader work, all of the plowing and harrowing. It was a very versatle tractor for a small dairy farm. Hold onto it I think you'll grow to love the tractor.

The 2010 's in good working condition I've seen go for $4000. and up. They are a great haying tractor. If the sheet metal is nice and straight then you got a bonus.
You are correct on the PTO shafts. The same shaft will work in both drive holes, just remove and turn it over.
Get the Deere service manual #SM2035 and it will tell you the changes made over their five year life span. No exterior changes but important hydraulic and mechanical changes.

I don't think I would jump to conclusions too quickly. It is interesting that you found so many negative posts about 2010s. I have a 1010 and the posts I remember are from questions about 1010s where the advice is almost always, "use your money to buy a 2010 instead." Must be a lot of people who think 2010 is okay.

I have had a 2010 for several years and also read the horrow tales. I believe most of the tales are from people that have never had a 2010. My 2010 gas has not had any problems. Plus I was once offered $5000 for it.

I wouldn't give up on your 2010 just because people say it is junk. It might turn out to be a good tractor. We farmed with a MF 1800 for awhile and never had any problems with it. Ask other people about the 1800 and they will say it was one of the worst tractors MF ever made. I think you are right in using your 2010 first before deciding to sell it.
