I just pickup a John Deere pull type plow 4/16" and was sold as a 666H and the man that sold it had a new
operators manual for the 666 and 666H. And I order a parts manual so the parts guy at John Deere did not have to go to the far back room of the dealership to find the old plow parts book. Any how I order some parts for this plow and when they came in they are not even close to what came off. They were bearings and seals for the land and furrow wheels. The plow I have looks to have a 1" spindel with a 3/4" fine sloted nut. And the parts that I order per the part number were bearing that look to fit a 1 1/2" or 1 3/4" spindel and a 1" fine sloted nut. The thing that started me thinking we have something smaller then a 666 is the hubs on a 666 plow have 6 bolts to bolt the rims on and this one only uses 4 bolts. Is this a 555H or a 444H ? Thanks CjW

Good question. I looked the my old books and on plows I go from 1958 and am missing till 1965. That still shows the 444H as a two bottom. And the brain cells want to say the 55 555H were 3 bottom and the 66 and 666H were 4 bottom and the 77 777H were 5 bottom and the 88 888H were 6 bottom. These were replaced with the F-600 series in 3 to 6 bottoms. They looked like the old plows but had a box beam running over the bottoms to tie the frame toghter to give extra clearance over thr truss frame. The 444H was still in the line as a 2 bottom when the larger F-600 replaced the others. Could be, and I have done this myself. a part broke and there was something handy out in machinery row that as if a whole parts assembly is replaced it will work. If it free the price is rigth. When I have done this I always make a note in the OP manual so years later I can remember what I did.

Mike, The late 55, 555 plows were available as 3 or 4 bottom and the 666 was I think available as 3,4, or 5 bottom, but had a heavier frame(3x1) vs the 555 had 2 3/4 x 1 frame bars. 777 had the axles mounted under the frame bars for clearance, and thus are easier to distinguish from the others. I don't have my books handy so am going from memory, hope it is working for me. Bob

Bob
Thanks for the help I will check the frame and see what it is I did get the bearings and seals at the dealer today and it look like it was a 555H but the tail wheel on the one I have is to big? And looks to have tapered bearing and the book shows that it would have chilled bearing if it was a 555H the dealer did not have a 777H book did they have four bolt hubs?

Woody, I think the tapered brg was an option for the tail wheel on the 555, I don't have that parts book, but i recall seeing that listed. Seems like there was an optional tail wheel too. In regard to my reply to Mike: I knew what I meant but you wouldn't know it from what I said about the 777 axles, actually they are mounted ABOVE the frame. Never heard of an 888 plow though.
